As the map below shows, the Axarquia region (itself part of Andalucia) sweeps in a broad arc from Malaga in the west to just past Nerja in the east. Inland it goes as far north as Alfarnate in the north.

Axarquia is a region of contrasts; from the bustling cosmopolitan coastal resorts to the quietest of rural retreats inland. This is a beautiful part of Spain, blessed by a superb climate providing 320 days of Sun a year, and rarely dropping below 10C even in the depths of winter. The beaches are open all year round and sunbathing is possible most months. In the mountains you will find rare birds of prey and many hiking opportunities.

The huge mountain range to the north protects the region from cold northerly winds, and allows an astonishing range of produce to be grown. Olive trees, vines, almonds, avocados, figs, kiwifruit and bananas all thrive in the warm climate. Further inland you will find lemon groves, pine, oak and carob trees. Sweet (and very alcoholic) wine from the Muscatel grape is bottled in nearly every pretty hill village.

Just two hours drive from the coast is skiing in the Sierra Nevada, and within one to two hours you can be in Granada, Seville or Cordoba.
