Bad Gastein by Richard Kershaw

Nestled in the Gasteinertal with a spectacular waterfall running through the centre, Bad Gastein is ideal for activities such as skiing, snowboarding and ice climbing in the winter, or mountain biking, walking and climbing in the summer. The town is also one of the principle spa resorts in the Alps, with over 20,000 litres of geothermal water rising in hot springs each day.

The winter snow in the Gastein Valley transforms the area into one of the finest and most beautiful ski regions in Salzburgerland. The valley is one of the 5 largest ski regions in Austria with 44 lifts taking skiers to over 200km of piste. The relatively high altitude provides Bad Gastein with some excellent snow conditions and it is extremely snow safe with the season opening at Sportgastein in late November. There are also 90km of cross country ski tracks in the valley, taking skiers up into the highest valleys.

In the summer, the mountains become a walkers’ paradise. The lift system takes walkers above the tree line to some amazing scenery. Stroll along the 350km of hiking trails lined with meadows and flowers in and around the Hohe Tauern National Park. The walks range from the sedate beside the river in the valley, to paths up the highest peaks. Cycling tracks are also abundant in the valley. Whether you want to cycle down the valley on a wide track or race down through the forest on challenging trails, the valley caters for every level.
