More diversity can be found in the climate. Over the course of a year, the hours of sunshine vary from 1,700 on the Cantabrian coast up to more than 3,000 in the south and the Canaries. In general Andalucia has an excellent climate for holidaymakers with sunshine all year round and little rain. Even in January and February coastal temperatures can reach 20 to 25 degrees. The Canary Islands are also known for their wonderful tropical climate.
Spain has many fiestas which are celebrated every year. These take place in every city, town and village, often with processions, fairgrounds, fireworks and all night parties. Meal times are taken seriously in Spain and are usually social occasions. Eating out is often cheap and meals tend to be substantial, particularly the Menu del Dia which can usually be found at lunchtimes. This tends to be two or three courses, often with bread and a drink thrown in, which typically costs between five and ten euros.
A great way to sample local dishes is with traditional tapas. These small portions are usually served in bars along with a drink and vary in price from very cheap to free, although you are more likely to have to pay in tourist areas.
Spain is the world's third largest wine producer. While best known for its red Rioja, white Rioja is also produced and the area of Jerez is famous for its sherry production. In some of the more rural areas, a request for a glass of white wine will bring forth a glass of sherry!
