Torre del Mar to Mezquitilla on the eastern Costa del Sol by Gavin Mills

The eastern Costa del Sol retains much of its traditional Spanish charm, and is a popular destination for Spanish families and holidaymakers who wish to relax away from the larger resorts.

The coastline stretching east from Malaga offers a wide range of beaches, from secluded coves and naturist beaches, to the larger, more commercial variety with craft stalls and pavement artistes.

TORRE DEL MAR, The Tower of the Sea

Torre is a bustling coastal town with a predominantly Spanish atmosphere. There are numerous shops and restaurants to be found, as well as a 500 mtr stretch of bars and discos along the seafront. The large sandy beach with its wide and attractive paseo (promenade) is a very popular place for the locals to take their evening stroll. There are many chiringuitos (beach bars) and restaurants to choose from.

CALETA DE VELEZ, The Bay of Velez-Malaga

Caleta is the mid-coastal point of the Axarquia. It is a vibrant little town with a small pleasure marina and a working harbour. There is a large restaurant in the port, overlooking the Marina . On Saturdays there is a very popular market along the main street. Caleta also boasts an 18 hole golf course at Baviera. There is a very pleasant paseo, together with play areas on the beach to keep the children amused.

ALGARROBO

Algarrobo Pueblo lies four klms inland, and is an attractive white, Moorish village with narrow streets which are often festooned with flowers.

Algarrobo Costa was once a fishing village but is now a small tourist resort, one of the few on the eastern Costa del Sol with high-rise buildings. There is a nice beach, and paseo with pretty and well kept gardens. At Algarrobo there are two landmark watchtowers which were built in the 16th Century for defence of the beaches.

MEZQUITILLA

Mezquitilla and neighbouring Lagos are both unspoilt fishing villages. There is a small, pretty paseo running through Mezquitilla, at one end of which can be found a number of original fishermen's cottages.

Algarrobo and Mezquitilla both have prehistoric origins, with Phoenician remains being found on sites dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries BC:

From Torre del Mar to Mezquitilla there are numerous restaurants to choose from,  serving excellent food at very good prices. Because of the special marine conditions in the area, the seafood is considered by many to be some of the best in Spain. Between Easter and the end of August, many of the restaurants and chiringuitos set up BBQ's on the beach where they cook the local speciality, "espetos de sardinas" - sardines cooked on skewers over a wood barbeque. Fantastic!
