Fethiye by Jo Tomkinson

Fethiye, “the land of lights”, is a busy town with an abundance of shops, restaurants, bars and a beautiful harbour. Fethiye and the surrounding area offer everything for holidaymakers of all ages. The scenery is breathtaking, with the mountains tumbling into the beautiful turquoise sea against a backdrop of bright blue skies, and throughout the winter and spring you will see snow-capped mountains in the distance.
There is something for everyone, and for the more energetic there are many sporting activities to choose from, including paragliding and white water rafting. This area is a cultural treasure trove, with many archaeological sites to visit including Patara, Cadianda, Xanthos and Tlos, all within one hour's drive. Saklikent Gorge (hidden valley) is the longest and deepest gorge in Turkey, and here you can sample typical Turkish cuisine whilst sitting on a platform over the river – so relaxing.
Calis Beach, famous for its beautiful sunsets and cooling summer breeze, boasts many restaurants to suit all tastes. It has a laid-back and relaxed atmosphere, making it the ideal destination for sun-worshippers, families and couples; despite offering so much for the holidaymaker however, it has retained its charm and is unspoilt by tourism.
Uzumlu is unspoilt and uncommercialised, and for those who want to escape the rat race and the pressures of modern living, here is a place to totally unwind, and yet, it is only 18km from Fethiye. In the village of Uzumlu there are restaurants, grocery shops, a post office, wine bar and a weekly market held on Fridays. As you walk around the village you will see the local ladies at their looms, weaving the “dastar – scarf”.
